Waterproof & Water Resistant Laminate FAQs

What is the difference between waterproof and water resistant laminate flooring?

Different types of laminate offer varied levels of water resistance. Some laminate options are simply water resistant, making them suitable for kitchens if you wipe spills quickly. While others may be 100% waterproof laminate, which is better suited for bathrooms. Designed to keep out moisture, waterproof laminate flooring like Oceana claims to provide up to 7 days of waterproof protection.

Read our waterproof laminate guide to learn more.

Will waterproof laminate flooring prevent swelling from spills?

Some waterproof laminate options can offer a degree of water protection, but it’s best to clean up spills as soon as you notice them. Laminate is made from high-density fibreboard (HFD), which is essentially compressed wood. This means it can be susceptible to water damage when exposed to moisture for long periods, which could cause swelling.

How long can water resistant laminate flooring handle moisture?

Some of our products, such as Oceana laminate, are guaranteed waterproof for up to 7 days. This means if you have a leak that you can’t fix right away, it may help buy you some time. However, for complete waterproofing, we recommend exploring PVC options such as luxury vinyl tile, which also come in realistic wood-effect styles.

Is waterproof laminate flooring suitable for bathrooms?

We have a range of water resistant bathroom laminate options that are suitable for moisture prone spaces. However, we recommend checking the product specifications before you commit to make sure it can provide what you need. Our helpful floorologists can help you explore and compare different water resistant laminate samples in store, or with a home visit.

Can water resistant laminate flooring withstand everyday spills?

Yes. Water resistant laminate flooring is designed with an easy-to-clean, hard-wearing top layer, making handling everyday spills and accidents a breeze.

Will water resistant laminate flooring warp over time?

Our water resistant laminate gives you plenty of time to clear up moisture before water damage can occur, providing a smart, solid floor that’s built to last. Many of our hardwearing laminates come with a 20–25-year wear guarantee thanks to its strong multi-ply core and protective top layer.

Please note, exposure to excess moisture for long periods could damage and warp planks. Always read the product specifications and care instructions.

Is waterproof laminate flooring more durable than standard laminate?

Yes, waterproof laminate and hardwearing laminate options are designed to be more durable than standard laminate options. If you’re worried about spills and moisture from kitchens, utility rooms and conservatories, consider water resistant and waterproof laminate as opposed to living room laminate.

How to maintain waterproof and water resistant laminate flooring

Water resistant laminate is easy-to-clean and offers great protection for your home. We recommend wiping up spills quickly with a soft cloth or dry mop, and cleaning sticky messes with laminate-friendly, pH-neutral floor cleaner. Our laminate care guide can help offer more handy maintenance tips – such as using protective furniture pads to prevent scratches.
