Water Resistant Vinyl Flooring FAQs

What’s the difference between water resistant and waterproof vinyl?

The main difference between water resistant and waterproof vinyl is the amount of moisture and water they can handle. Waterproof means the flooring can handle continuous exposure to water, while water resistant flooring can cope with day-to-day spills and splashes. The PVC material that vinyl flooring is made from is technically waterproof, but because water could seep between the gaps around the edges when it’s fitted, it’s called water resistant vinyl instead. This means it’s great for bathrooms and kitchens, but you couldn’t use it in a wet room.

Water resistant vinyl can deal with spills and moisture but requires speedy clean-up to avoid long-term water damage. You can learn more in our guide on whether vinyl is waterproof.

How can I care for water resistant vinyl flooring?

It’s always stressful when you first have new flooring installed, since you want to make sure you care for it correctly so it will last as long as possible. We advise you sweep or vacuum your water resistant vinyl frequently to remove any dirt and debris that would scratch the surface. Weekly mopping (with a damp mop) will also help maintain the material but be careful not to use any harsh chemicals. Using rugs and mats on high-traffic areas will also help avoid long-term damage.

Before your new Tapi flooring is installed, you'll might want to have a look at our guide on how to clean vinyl floors. This will tell you exactly how to tackle any problems and how to maintain it to keep it looking lovely.

How should you install waterproof vinyl flooring?

At Tapi, we offer an amazing installation service. For a hassle-free experience, an expert team of independent fitters can install the vinyl and even dispose of your old flooring. You can learn more and check how much this could cost on our fitting services page.

What happens if water gets under waterproof vinyl?

If water gets under your waterproof vinyl, it’s important to act quickly. Locate where the water is coming from to stop further leakage. You will then want to mop up the excess water and dry with towels. Dry out the room by opening windows or use a dehumidifier to speed things up. If your vinyl is curling, warping, or discoloured, you may need to remove and replace your sheet vinyl flooring.
